Biography for Sharon Bouchonville

How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do this ride?
Rec.bicycles.rides. Because I wanted to do a MOBA 2002 (see next question for explanation of MOBA), and had not decided what my route would be. When I saw the post about the ride, I decided I could do this.

Touring experience:
I have done many sag-supported tours like GOBA, TOSRV, Michigan Circle Tour, etc. Last year I started getting interested in self-supported touring, and did several overnight trips and two-night trips just around my home. Then I did my dream tour last June which I called MOBA "My Own Bike Adventure". I took my Bike Friday to Buffalo NY on an Amtrak train, and rode it home to Oberlin, OH. It took me 6 days, and totaled 328 miles. It was a grand adventure!

Tell us about your bike:
I will be riding my Bike Friday, "Pocket Llama" and towing a trailer with my clothes and other gear. The Bike Friday folds up and fits into a suitcase so you can check it as luggage or even carry it right onto the train with you (which I will be doing). The suitcase converts to a trailer and attaches to the bike, so you have a way to carry your luggage.

Describe your training regimen:
I ride almost every day, all year round. I commute to work on all shifts, ride for most of my daily errands, and do several recreational rides during the week. I don't really pursue a "training regimen" except that when I can, I attach a loaded trailer on the bike so I will be accustomed to pulling it. Sometimes, that is how I get my groceries home. I ride because I love to. If I started calling it training, I might not have so much fun. And, since I ride all year, I don't need the spring warm up time that some do.

How many miles do you ride a year?
Last year I rode 8,007 miles. My mileage increases every year, but over the past 5 years, I rode over 20,000 miles (not including 2002).

Are you car free or interested?
I consider myself "car free" locally, because I don't need my car for transportation in town. But I have to have a car to maintain a relationship with my husband. He works on a ship on the Great Lakes, and I drive to docks all over Ohio and Michigan to see him when I can.

How are you making time for this event?
When I heard about it, I already had that week scheduled for vacation time.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002?
9000

What are your fears about doing this ride?
None

Do you have any special skills?
No

Are you affiliated with any bike club E-mail groups?
Mine - I am the Webmaster for our bike club Silver Wheels.

What other activities are you involved in?
Study history of the Great Lakes, lighthouses, and ships, while chasing my husband's ship around. Teach a Junior High School Sunday School Class. Computers - website coordinator for our bike club, have taught courses in Microsoft Office (but I don't do that anymore because I don't have time)
