Day 149

Day 149 brings us to 4305.2 miles and El Paso, Texas.

Happy to say that we got NBC in Phoenix, AZ. We filmed spot on 3/2 and a local PKD patient and Friend's Group coordinator's, Doug Phelps, was filmed with me. The spot was to air 3/5, however, with the high school shootings & copy cat threats was pushed all week and aired Friday, March 9th on 5:00 news.

Departed Phoenix 3/6 for Tucson, AZ and was forced to drive the last 50 miles in a major storm but we made it. As luck would have it as soon as I was soaked to the bone after hooking up - the sun came out! Then it hailed an hour later.

Pitched Tucson media but with storm and high school shootings taking up most media was not successful. Both Tucson papers were interested but were on deadline stories and could not do my story on short notice, therefore, I asked them to please do a story on local PKD people after I left and they said they would. I referred them on to a local PKD Friend's Group person and patient so hope they get article soon.

Tucson was beautiful and the RV Park was nestled up against a giant cactus field! Trying to explain to Max why he needed to stay away from cactus was hard but he finally got it. I don't think Max likes the desert areas because walks consist of him lifting his paws to remove stickers...but he is a trooper. We remove them and walk on...

We left Tucson for El Paso, TX Thursday trying to out run the next storm coming across the country and it was a beautiful day and drive. Something about the Arizona desert with its open expanse and mountains looming in the distance is majestic. Indian culture abounds everywhere and I find myself looking for arrowheads while walking Max, even at rest areas.

We made it as far as Deming, NM to an Escapee's RV Park, which is the RV club I am a member of. All the Escapee's members stay there creating a sense of "family" and Max won the hearts of many.

A couple people came up and had seen our story in the Coachmen Capers Magazine which goes to all Coachmen RV owners and the article in the Escapee's Club Magazine. We were "mini celebrities" and it reinforced that Max and I are getting our PKD story out there!

When checking my PocketMail I had to wait in line 4 people deep since PocketMail is the only way us RVers can get e-mail without a phone line by being able to send/receive from pay phones. I had never seen so many PocketMail devices in one place!

Rested up for the night and headed out for El Paso, TX Friday morning. Another beautiful day and drive. We had already pitched the media and CBS expressed interest in filming us as we drove into El Paso. I stopped in Las Cruces, NM at my favorite turquoise shop right off I-10 with room for the RV and called CBS. No cameras were available so CBS decided it would be best to just head to RV park in El Paso and they would film story Saturday morning. So, looks like PKD people in El Paso will be reached so we are happy!

High winds and another storm are coming across country so we hope to be able to head out by Sunday so we don't get caught in next storm. Next stop is San Antonio, TX. Well, CBS should be here in a while and I have to clean the RV and my Nissan and motorcycle for the cameras so we better get going.

Hope all of you are well and remember to get out there and get those pledges and make every mile we drive help gets us closer to the cure!
