The Santa Cruz NBG Fest is one of the world's largest events for cross-country and trans-coastal cyclists and will draw cyclists from all over the US.

Biography for David Rabinowitz

How did you find out about NBG and why you want to do this ride?
I'm a member of WABA and on their email list. I've been meaning to ride the whole C&O trail, and this gives me a good excuse. I also support the NBG idea and want to help get it done.

Touring experience:
My last real touring was decades ago with a college outdoor club, in the Lancaster County PA area, but I use my bike as my principal means of local transportation, with local being any trip I can complete in one day.

Tell us about your bike:
It's a Miyata 310 road bike, about 20 years old. I estimate it has well over 50K miles on it.

Describe your training regimen:
I use my bike for transportation, riding at least 10 miles a day, and generally over 100 miles each week, with 40+ mile days not unusual.

How many miles do you ride a year?
When I'm not taking long trips around the country in my van, which is what I did for the last year (until mid March), I do at least 5K miles/year. When I'm on the road, my bike is in the van and I ride it whenever I spend some time in one location (e.g. I rode into Mexico from Arizona last January – it turned out to be a painless border crossing in both directions, the best I've ever experienced).

Are you car free or interested?
I am not sufficiently settled to be car-free. I did live in California for more than 5 years without a car in the past.

How are you making time for this event?
I just returned to the DC area and haven't made many time commitments yet.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2002?
Probably keep the current rate of 5K+.

What are your fears about doing this ride?
My principal concern is the surface of the C&O bike path. I've ridden short distances on it and it's not as pleasant, safe or fast as a paved surface.

Do you have any special skills?
What would you consider a "special skill"?

Are you affiliated with any bike club E-mail groups?
WABA

What other activities are you involved in?
All sorts.

Occupation:
Electrical Engineer, currently on "extended vacation".
