PocketMail History

PocketMail® mobile e-mail technology was invented by a U.S. diplomat and an engineer who shared a common problem faced by travelers everywhere - communicating while on the road. The two were in London for a friend’s wedding and found, despite numerous attempts with their expensive laptops, they were both unable to get their e-mail. In frustration, they finally locked themselves in a hotel room, determined to solve the problem of remote access to e-mail. After a long night spent running to and from a local electronics store, trying to jury-rig a connection for their laptops, they began imagining an e-mail device that would actually work anytime, anywhere.

In 1995, they quit their jobs and founded a company, now known as PocketMail, to develop a portable e-mail device. Inspired by space probe communications technology originally developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and through involvement with the NASA Ames Technology Commercialization Center, the company successfully developed a handheld computer with innovative acoustic modem technology that required no connection to a telephone jack. Thus was born the first PocketMail “e-mail appliance,” the only truly portable e-mail device on the market at the time.

PocketMail’s patented e-mail technology allows customers to send and receive e-mail using a small, handheld device anytime, anywhere, over virtually any telephone (including payphones, cordless phones and cell phones).

The PocketMail Composer™, the company’s latest product, is a stand-alone portable e-mail appliance and organizer that offers affordable, mobile access to Internet e-mail. It can also be used to send faxes.

To send and receive e-mail using a PocketMail device, all one has to do is dial an access number and then hold the device up to the phone. The simplicity and convenience of PocketMail products and services have made them extremely popular with a wide range of customers, including RV owners, sailing enthusiasts, retirees, long distance hikers and mobile workers like truckers and cruise ship workers – anyone who needs affordable access to e-mail without a computer.

The PocketMail Service was launched in the USA in 1998 and has since expanded to Australia, Canada and the following Western European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

PocketMail Group now operates the PocketMail Service as one unified global operation, with primary offices in Sydney, Australia, and San Jose, California, and is publicly listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX: PKT).
