A few months ago, I was asked to try out a new product the PocketMail Composer. It is a small, clamshell-style PDA (about the size of a Psion) with the specific purpose of allowing you to get your e-mail "anywhere, anytime from virtually any phone." Although the Composer will never replace my iPAQ 3975, it has proven to be a great little device. Not only is it a mobile "E-mail Appliance," it is also a pocket-sized organizer. You have access to your contacts, a calculator, to-do list, calendar, and memo pad.
When you are ready to check your e-mail, you flip out the "ear-piece" on the bottom of the unit, dial a toll-free access number, hold the device up to the phone, press the transfer button, and your mail starts to transfer. Not only can you check your PocketMail e-mail, but also you can pre-configure, via a web browser, the AOL and POP3 mail accounts you want to be checked. To make more effective use of your time, you can specify that the entire message or just the message headers be downloaded.

Not only can you send and receive your e-mail and receive faxes, but you can also synchronize to Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes with the software that comes packaged with the device. You can schedule appointments and tasks and jot notes on the built-in memo pad.
The PocketMail Composer is a great device for someone who is on the go and needs to stay in contact with home, office or friends. It is especially useful for people who travel by automobile as it can be used anywhere there's a payphone.
