The Yacht Report - October 2003

We can all learn lessons from watching others, and here is a tip taken from those who cruise the world in yachts for fun, rather than for wages. The average yachtie is canny when it comes to costs, and expenditure on communication is no exception. Many yachties favour Pocketmail, a low-cost, easy-to-use, mobile e-mail service that enables users to send and receive e-mails fast and reliably using the PocketMail Composer and an ordinary telephone. The cost is US$99 to buy the composer, with unlimited service available from US$9.95 per month. The PocketMail Composer is a handheld mobile-email device on which e-mail messages are typed. The device is then taken to a regular payphone, a free phone number is dialled, the device is held to the receiver and the e-mails are downloaded and retrieved. PocketMail mobile e-mail is also available via the web and on WAP cellular phones.

Until now, the PocketMail product was primarily direct-market to consumers, but now the company is proposing to distribute the PocketMail Composer to boating customers worldwide. Local access was available in Austria, Belgium, Denmakr, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK from 28 May, 2003. Local access is already available in the United States, Canada and Australia. There are no additional costs for Global Roaming. Unlike most other mobile e-mail solutions, PocketMail can be used in every country in the world, and is not restricted by network coverage limitations.
