Windowslink - Serial to USB Adapaters

These directions are for using a USB-to-Serial port adapter with WindowsLink and a Composer or PM-32. Not all adapters work with all applications. Usage varies with the quality of the software driver supplied with the adapter. Each seems to be different. Each may interact with the hardware in your computer differently. PocketMail assumes no responsibility that these adapters will work correctly with your particular computer.

The IOGEAR GUC232A USB PDA/Serial Adapter has been tested to work on a number of different computers. To use this adapter, and possibly others, do the following.

Install the adapter and driver software according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember that Windows drivers do not fully initialize unless you reboot the computer. Make sure that you restart your computer after installing the driver software.

Set the default speed of the USB serial port to the speed used by WindowsLink and Composer. To do this go to the Start menus and select Settings, then select Control Panel. Double click on the System icon then select the Device Manager tab. Press the ‘+’ next to Ports (COM & LPT) to expand the list and display all the ports. Select the port of the newly added USB serial port and then press the Properties button at the bottom (the USB adapter must be plugged into the computer to perform this action.) Another dialog box will appear. Press the Port Settings tab and set Bits per second to 38400 (the default for Composer), set Flow control to None. You should not need to change the other fields. They should default to 8 data bits, No parity and 1 stop bit. Press the OK button to confirm these changes.

Perform a WindowsLink to Composer synchronization in the expected way. Note that you will need to select the serial port you have added when you view the Sync with PMU dialog box by using the Change Port button. If the port is grayed out and can not be selected then something in the installation is wrong. This will also happen if you do not have the USB to serial adapter plugged into the computer. An attempted sync will result in an error opening COM port message.
